Nature in Focus

This section brings the botanical into closer focus, reflecting Carole’s lifelong passion for wild plants and flowers. In an earlier career as an illustrator, close and detailed drawing were called for in the many gardening books that formed a large part of Carole’s commissions.

As a painter: Carole’s work became freer, more expressive as she developed a loose and flowing watercolour style. The foregrounds of her paintings frequently belong to plants, always there though frequently abbreviated and suggested expressive lines, applied with a palette knife, grasses perhaps or merely a movement.

Strongly influenced by the changing seasons, Carole’s paintings retain a strong relationship with their natural subject while moving through various degrees of abstraction. Working in a flowing style, she enjoys experimenting with colour, mark making and a range of water soluble media, enjoying their potential for resist effects.
